She completed her first two years of psychiatry residency in the Creighton University-University of Nebraska Psychiatry Residency Program after which she moved to Tucson to complete her last two years of psychiatry training at the University of Arizona, where she also served as Chief Resident.
Dr. Chesen initially joined the medical school faculty full-time at the University of Arizona, splitting her time between teaching, providing clinical care to patients and engaging in academic pursuits, including running a telepsychiatry program providing outreach to the Navajo and Hopi Nations. She is Board Certified in general psychiatry by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. In 2006, Dr. Chesen moved home to Nebraska to join the faculty of her alma mater, the University of Nebraska College of Medicine where she enjoyed clinical academic work until she left to start her solo outpatient private practice in 2009.
Dr. Chesen’s areas of clinical interest are broad. She practices general psychiatry, and mostly sees patients aged 12 and older. She is known for her expertise in evaluating and treating patients who have not had an optimal outcome elsewhere. Often she works with patients suffering from psychiatric illness and concurrent non-psychiatric medical problems, including special populations such as pregnant/postpartum women or patients with concurrent serious medical problems or chronic pain. She frequently works with patients suffering from eating disorders, personality disorders, severe psychological trauma, mood disorders and patients requiring complex pharmacotherapy. She is often consulted by peers regarding the use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) which are a special class of antidepressant medications. She especially enjoys working with fellow physicians as patients, and is dedicated to helping physicians combat burnout and pursue self-care.
